I wonder if this is a commentary of a child's desire to please, and desire to seek a connection with their emotionally (and even physically) distant parents, and likewise, their growing desire to seek a connection with someone else if that parent is absent? Her prime motivations has always been for attention and praise, very much like how Shinji's always wanted his father's praise and attention.

Interesting too, was Asuka's history, which goes a ways towards explaining her motivations, and why she chooses to act the way she does. Rei's denial that she and Kaworu were the same, is very interesting - potentially signalling that while their composition / shell may be the same, she still has a soul somewhere.

It also leads into volume 9, where the flashback sequences start revealing Asuka's troubled relationship with her mother, ultimately leading to a mental breakdown during a confrontation with an Angel. Volume 8 also signals the end of a character, and his death fuels Misato's passion in sifting fact from fiction. Volume 8, Fuyutsuki's flashbacks with his discussions with Yui Ikari (and even those with Gendo) are incredibly telling. There's a complex, high-level discussion of the human psyche, breaking through physical barriers (as if that wasn't already obvious with both the Angels' and EVA units' use of AT fields), what the LCL liquid is (potentially an alternative to amniotic fluid), and even what (or more accurately, who) Rei is. Stories and the overarching idea start coming to the fore once Shinji becomes absorbed into EVA-01. It becomes very quickly apparent, that EVA-01 has a mind of her own. While discussions were taking place, EVA-00 (Rei) and EVA-02 (Asuka) are busy fighting off an Angel, that very quickly incapacitated both EVA units, and EVA-01 has rejected the Dummy Plug, which had previously worked.

It's at this point that Kaji takes him aside, and explains to Shinji, his tragic story after he was left an orphan along with his brother and other children, after the events of the Second Impact.Īs much as I appreciated the insight into Kaji's survivor guilt, what struck me most was his comment and understanding that the Second Impact occurred because an Angel made contact with Adam (which will be made clear later). He leaves NERV once again, refusing to ever pilot EVA-01, after another dramatic confrontation with his father, Gendo Ikari.

The original volume 7 opens with Shinji, undergoing sync tests with EVA-01, but fighting it every step along the way (recall that the previous volume ended up in a traumatic manner, with the death of one of his close friends). It is safe to say that this 3rd collection (comprising of the original volumes 7, 8 and 9) is where things are starting to come to a head, and things are becoming more and more troubling.
